První výpravná (heroicko-elegická) báseň anglické literatury, kterou novodobí literární historici pojmenovali po jejím hlavním hrdinovi. Je to nejvýznamnější památka a v obecném povědomí i symbol nejstarší anglické literatury - písemnictví anglosaské Anglie (anglosaské období se tradičně vymezuje lety 449-1066). Tato báseň o 3 182 verších se dochovala v jediném rukopise z období kolem r. 1000. Místo a doba jejího vzniku (nejspíše někdy mezi lety 750-550), historie jejího textu i totožnost jejího tvůrce (spíše vzdělaný klerik nežli potulný zpěvák, rozhodně však křesťan) zůstávají i po bezmála dvou stoletích filologických a literárně-historických zkoumání neznáme.
Ač je skladba bezpochyby anglosaského původu, její děj se odehrává na území dnešního Švédska a Dánska někdy na přelomu 5. a 6. století po Kr. Béowulf, urozený válečník z kmene Geatů, se spolu se čtrnácti druhy přeplaví k dánskému dvoru krále Hrodgara, aby ho vysvobodil z područí netvora jménem Grendel, sídlícího v bažinách. Ten už dvanáct let noc co noc přepadá Hrodgarovu hodovní síň Heorot a pokaždé si odnáší krvavou kořist: třicet dánských válečníků. Béowulf Grendela po urputném boji v Heorotu smrtelně zraní a zažene na útěk. Vzápětí je nucen podstoupit další, ještě obtížnější souboj s Grendelovou matkou, jež chce pomstít smrt svého syna, a to v příbytku obou oblud na dně jezera či mořského fjordu. S pomocí zázračného meče, který tam najde, Béowulf zvítězí i podruhé. Posléze se, bohatě obdarován dánským králem, vrací domů. Druhá část skladby zachycuje Béowulfa v době, kdy už padesát let moudře panuje Geatům. Dějovým jádrem je jeho třetí- a poslední- velký zápas, tentokrát s ohnivým drakem. Drak, rozezlen krádeží zlatého poháru z pokladu, který od věků střeží ve skalní mohyle, pustoší geatskou říši. Souboj končí smrtí obou
protivníků. Zlato je pohřbeno spolu s Béowulfem, drakovo tělo shozeno z útesu do moře a Geatům, lidu bez krále, napříště hrozí války a poroba. Děj skladby vyrůstá ze starogermánských lidových pověstí a využívá motivů mytických a heroicko-legendámích (řada z nich se objevuje v literárních památkách germánského Severu po r. 1200). Vazba příběhu na historii je velmi sporá. Děj nepostupuje lineárně a nemá ani prvořadou důležitost: výpravný prvek je podřízen úvahovému. V nejobecnějším smyslu je Béowulf meditací o životě předků, v níž se mísí obdiv s lítostí-meditací o čase, kdy rané germánské bojové družiny dobývaly území pro nová kmenová království, kdy si
hrdinské ctnosti jako statečnost, věrnost a štědrost vysluhovaly chválu v písních a kdy k jejich nositelům, usilujícím o věčnou válečnickou slávu v bludném kruhu výbojů a pomst, dosud nedolehla radostná zvěst o křesťanské naději.
