The textbook introduces to English lexicology and to related linguistic disciplines, viz. semiotics, semantics, onomatology and morphology. It explains the basics of the theory of signs, word-formation, types and shifts of meaning, semantic relations between lexical units, word classes, lexical borrowings and geographical varieties of English. The theory is illustrated by and practised on exercises, equipped with a key.
