Abstrakt: 

Tato disertační práce se zabývá konkurenci participiálních a finitních vět příslovečných v psaných textech anglického odborného stylu. Popisuje specifické vlastnosti
participiálních vět a ukazuje, jak tyto vlastnosti mohou na jedné straně vést k preferenci nefinitního před finitním vyjádřením a na straně druhé užiti participiální věty blokovat.
Ukazuje se, že se faktory ovlivňující volbu participiální nebo finitní věty uplatňují na různých úrovních výstavby adverbiální věty, souvětí a textu. Na úrovni příslovečné věty jsou
takovýmito faktory subordinátory a predikátová slovesa. Přísudek participiální věty nemůže byt tvořen centrálními modálními slovesy, protože nemají neurčité tvary; z pomocných sloves se vyskytuji jen be a have. I užití sponových a plno významových sloves v participiálních větách podléhá určitým omezením. Sponová a plno významová stavová slovesa funguji jako predikáty participiálních vět s nevyjádřeným podmětem jen zřídka. Jejich výrazně vyšší výskyt v absolutních participiálních konstrukcích, zejména tam, kde je absolutní konstrukce uvozena with nebo without, zřejmě souvisí s převládajícími sémantickými rolemi těchto konstrukcí (určeni průvodních okolnosti, 'vysvětlující' adjunkty). Užiti participiálního predikátu může vest k neutralizaci vztahů následnosti a současnosti mezi propozicemi věty vedlejší a věty hlavni. Anglicky systém participiálních tvarů však umožňuje tyto vztahy explicitně vyjádřit tam, kde jsou pro sděleni daného obsahu relevantní. K explicitnímu vyjádření vztahů mezi větou příslovečnou a větou hlavni slouží vedle slovesných tvarů také příslovečná určení a subordinátory.
