English non-prepositional translation equivalents of Czech prepositions
Translation experience shows that in contrast to the focus of bilingual dictionaries on direct formal equivalents of the same word-class, translation equivalence is frequently achieved by other means. Thanks to parallel corpora which significantly simplify and speed up data collection, it is now possible to quantify the proportion of direct and indirect equivalents and determine what the indirect equivalents are like and why. The paper draws on an ongoing study of English equivalents of Czech prepositions and addresses non-prepositional translation equivalents. The results show that some 25 per cent of the equivalents are in fact non-prepositional, a number far from negligible. These equivalents fall into two broad subgroups, lexical-structural and implied equivalents. The paper analyzes them in order to identify and describe the range of translation strategies these equivalents represent.
